A vegan on holiday: Barcelona – part three. Eatin’ burgers

In Spain you generally want to eat tapas, I get it. I did. But when you’re hungry and want a quick, cheap snack and stumble across Bacoa – you’ll become their biggest fan. I challenge you not to.

If you’re hating on me right now for eating burgers in a country with incredible food, hear me out and let me set the scene.

For my Boyfriend’s birthday this year, I took him to Barcelona for the Formula One. Circuit de Barcelona-catalunya is a vast track, roughly about 30 minutes drive from Estació del Nord – the bus station. Estació del Nord is a 30 minute walk from Barcelona beach or 10 minute taxi ride.

If you do choose to get a taxi rather than walk, you’ll miss out on some beautiful scenery, so I advise you to walk at least one day.

We walked, we walked a lot. Having my phone on me all day I checked our steps – 24,849 steps. 17.1km!

Digressing slightly but when we returned to our AirBnb later that evening we were hungry.

Bacoa Burger is a burger bar in Barcelona and Madrid. Bacoa is a fast food restaurant but with a difference, it’s fresh, handmade and organic.

Bacoa offers a vegan option as well as vegetarian, plus many sides and styles.

The vegan option – Gran Vegano is a yummy chickpea burger with avocado relish. There is a selection of either the chickpea burger or blackbean. If you’re not feeling the bun, there is a choice of burger with a salad bowl minus the bread.

If you read my last post about the best vegan ice cream in Barcelona you’ll know my intolerance to soy and cacao gave me a break whilst I was on holiday so foods I’d normally avoid – cacao, soy flour bread etc I ate every single day. So, apologies salad bowl, I’m eating the bread! Gimme all the breads.

Bacoa was delicious, so much so on the lazy beach days we ate take-away Bacoa every lunch. Sun, sea, Sangria and Gran Vegano. Gosh, take me back.

Bacoa wasn’t the only burger bar, Bernies – beautiful Bernies.

Bernie’s Diner – Gothic Quarter

Bernie’s is a American style diner in the Gothic Quarter area of Barcelona. A 15 minute walk from the seafront.

Bernie’s is limited for vegetarians and vegans however hola veggie burger.

For the vegan option omit the cheese and coleslaw and add fries, obviously.

Bernie’s has a great range of hand-made natural sauces too including B.B.Q, sweet ketchup and spicy ketchup, these aren’t normally on the table so ask your waiter. The spicy ketchup is mmmmmmm.
